CLEANING THE BOTTLE

A FEW TIPS

You can also use this under regular old polish if you want to avoid the fuss of using polish remover altogether.

Here’s the thing about makeup: it’s really, really expensive. Pointlessly so. Not just on the high end–where some gel solids and kelp can run you $150+–but also on the lower end, where carnuba wax, red dye and a laundry list of unpronounceable chemicals go for way more than they’re worth.

Lip Balm #1

Ingredients:

• 1 tsp. Beeswax  (or try carnauba or candelilla wax)
• 2 tsp. Shea Butter (or try Mango Butter, Avocado Butter, or Cocoa Butter)
• 1 tsp. Sweet Almond Oil (or try Olive, Avocado, or Apricot)
• 5 drops essential oil (hemp, peppermint, lavender, anise, and cinnamon.  Stay away from lime, orange, grapefruit, and bergamot which can cause the sun to burn your lips)
  

Directions:

1. Gently melt all ingredients together on low heat.
2. Remove from heat and allow to cool for a few minutes.
3. Add Essential oil and/or colorants and mix well.
4. Pour into lip balm tubes or pots.

Optional Color Add-Ins:

• For Red Hues: 1/4 teaspoon of beet root powder and 1/4 teaspoon alkanet root powder
• For Brown/Tan Hues: 1/4 teaspoon (or more for color) of cocoa powder, a tiny pinch of cinnamon or turmeric to get the shade you want
• For a more Matte texture: 1/4 teaspoon bentonite clay– use this with a color so it doesn’t leave a white tint on the lips.

Lip Balm #2

Lipstick

Ingredients:

•  1 teaspoon beeswax
• 1 teaspoon Shea butter or Cocoa Butter (I prefer cocoa for that slight cocoa scent)
• 1 teaspoon coconut oil
• 4 drops essential oils of choice (peppermint plumps your lips slightly by increasing blood flow, so I like to use it in this recipe)

Optional Color Add-Ins:

• Red Hues: 1 teaspoon of beet root powder and 1/4 teaspoon alkanet root powder
• Brown/Tan Hues: 1/2 teaspoon (or more for color) of cocoa powder, a tiny pinch of cinnamon or turmeric to get the shade you want (don’t use too much turmeric, unless you want your lips to stay yellow for a while).
• A more Matte texture: 1/2 teaspoon bentonite clay– use this with a color so it doesn’t leave a white tint on the lips.

Directions:

• Melt the beeswax, shea butter/cocoa butter and coconut oil in a glass measuring container in a small pot of simmering (not boiling) water. It should melt quickly because so little of each ingredient is used.

• When melted, remove from heat and add any optional ingredients like color or scent .

• Once all ingredients are mixed well but still liquid, carefully pour into the lip container. I try to fill it until it’s almost overflowing.  This reduces the chance of a hole forming as it cools and shrinks.  Leave to cool for at least half an hour.  Do not allow to set in the sun or it will melt.  Plus, shea butter gets grainy if you over heat it.  Cooking this once is fine, but you’ll find it grainy if you leave it in a hot car.

For those of you concerned about what chemicals we’re putting in and on our bodies, you can’t get more natural than this homemade berry lip stain! We love it because it adds the perfect “just-bitten” hint of color to fake that Snow White luscious lip! Here’s how to do it yourself:

INGREDIENTS: 3 Blackberries (for their bright berry color), 1 Raspberry (for its feminine pink color), 3 Pomegranate Seeds (for their vibrant red color), 1/2 teaspoon edible oil (I used Extra Virgin Olive Oil), a small Bowl + Spoon (or mortar + pestle if you have them), Fork or Sifter to drain, small 5-gram Pot/Jar with screw top from any craft store

STEP 1: Mash the blackberries and raspberry in the bowl thoroughly with the back of your spoon.

STEP 2: Add the pomegranate juice into the mixture by individually squeezing them between your thumb and index fingers over the bowl.

STEP 3: Pour the olive oil into the bowl and stir everything together with your spoon.

STEP 4: Finish by draining the liquid from the mixture into your small portable jar.

For application, use your fingers, a lip brush or a Q-tip. It’ll only be good for a few days so refrigerate it for longevity. Have fun with it and even try different fruits (acai berries, cherries, etc)! You can play with the ratios of each fruit to customize your desired shade but you’ll get the most color payoff from the blackberries.

Handmade Cream Eyeshadow Recipe

Here’s what you need to get started:
Measure Spoons
Glass Pyrex Measuring Cup
Graduated 3ml Plastic Transfer Pipettes
5 gram Eyeshadow Container
Microwave
Spoon

Ingredients:
8 White Beeswax Pastilles
1 teaspoon Refined Shea Butter
24 drops (approximately .75ml) Refined Jojoba Oil
120 drops (approximately 3.75ml) Vegetable Glycerin
12 drops Vitamin E Oil
2 teaspoons Ultramarine Violet Pigment Powder (or you choice of oxide or ultramarine pigments or combination of Cosmetic Mica Pigment Powder andTitanium Dioxide)
1/4 teaspoon Cosmetic Pearl Mica Powder

Powdered Eye Shadow

Ingredients:

• 1/4 teaspoon Arrowroot Powder
• 1/8 teaspoon Magnesium Stearate
• 1/16 - 1/4 teaspoon Eye Approved Pearlescent Mica Powder
• 2 - 4 drops Jojoba

Notes:

• Oil is added to help bind the powders and give them better coverage on the skin. The oil helps to keep the powders from becoming too "dusty." Loose powders without the added oil can cause dust flecks to enter the eyes and cause irritation.
• Jojoba was selected for its stable shelf life and nutritive value. Other oils can be substituted, but be sure to keep the properties of each oil in mind. Other lipids with stable shelf lives include Watermelon Seed Oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Meadowfoam Oil andCranberry Seed Oil.
Packaging Suggestions:
• Use 1/8 - 1/2 ounce plastic jars. FNWL's clear Dome Lip Balm Jars make it easy to visually see the color of your shadow through the see-through tops.
• For loose powders, do not fill the jar completely. Leave room so that you can easily tap your shadow brush over the jar without it coming into contact with the powder as you tap.
• If you want a compacted shadow, we recommend making enough product to fill the jar. Once your jar is filled, use plastic wrap and press firmly on the surface of the powder to compact it down. Add more powder if necessary and repeat. Your pressed powder will not be as tightly compacted as commercially made shadows.

Directions:

• Add the Arrowroot Powder and the Magnesium Stearate to a mortar or 8-12 ounce bowl and blend with a pestle, small fork or spoon.
• Add a drop of Watermelon Seed Oil to the blended powders and mix well. Add another drop of oil and again mix well. Repeat until you've reached the appropriate number of drops for your batch size. The amount of oil that you add correlates to how much Mica Powder you add.
• Transfer the powder to a clean bowl. Try to keep from transferring any unevenly blended powders on the sides of of your first bowl or mortar into the fresh bowl.
• Add your choice of eye approved Pearlescent Mica Powder and mix well with a small fork or spoon. Do not use a pestle as the pressure on the micas can damage the surface of the micas and affect the shimmering appearance of the powder. Add the Mica Powder gradually until you've reached your desired shade.
• Transfer the shadow into your choice of packaging.

Matte Eye Shadow:

• If you prefer a matte finish to your shadow, use Eye Approved Iron Oxide or Ultramarine Powders instead of Pearlescent Mica Powders. It takes less iron oxide to tint eye shadow than it does the pearlescent mica powders. The oxides also tend to be a little clumpy, so it can help to use a mortar and pestle. We don't recommend using a pestle with the pearlescent micas, but it's fine to use a pestle with oxides or ultramarines. Start with about 1/32 teaspoon of your chosen oxide and blend into your arrowroot powder/magnesium stearate/oil mixture. Continue to add more until you've reached your desired shade.
• If you prefer a slightly frosted shadow, follow the directions for making a matte eye shadow using oxides and ultramarines, but also add a small amount of a pearlescent mica.

Color Suggestions:

• You can use a single pearlescent mica powder, or blend several together to achieve specific hues.
• You can also combine oxides and ultramarines with the pearlescent micas for even greater combinations in tonality and texture.
• If you prefer a lighter/brighter hue, reduce the amount of colorant that you add to the magnesium stearate/arrowroot/oil blend. You can also add oil dispersible titanium dioxide (start with just 1/32 teaspoon) to brighten your shadow.
• If you prefer a darker hue, use more mica powder or colorant or add a smidgen of black mica or black oxide. If you use the maximum amount of mica, remember that your final shadow might be a bit "dusty" if you do not use enough oil.
